From looking at the discussion of everyday people on Twitter, it is apparent that the Wikipedia blackout has been very successful at attracting attention to the cause. Wikipedia is the number 5 site on the web but is also an important bridge between the nerd community and other “normal.” Combined with its dedication to open principles, it was the perfect choice for a centerpiece of the SOPA protest movement. Not enough non geeks know what reddit is. It was also wise not to black out social sites, because they provide a forum for discussion of SOPA. All in all, I think Wikipedia was a proton torpedo to the heart of SOPA.
